Maintaining Mental Health

As the world continues to adapt to a hybrid work-life balance, technology has been a critical tool for educators and beyond. Activities that used to be conducted in a crowded room are now held over a video platform or canceled altogether. Social distancing guidelines and quarantine cautions are very important but can also have damaging effects on mental health if these practices are not carefully balanced.

At UNH Online, we have been purveyors of distance education for quite some time. Here you will find helpful tips from our Student Success Team for distance education students to maintain positive mental health.

Maintaining Your Mental Health

Take time away from the screen

It seems our daily lives revolve around screens whether that be a computer, phone, or TV. It is important to take a break from screen time, even while completing coursework. Use this time to head outdoors, go for a drive, read a book, or do whatever activity that may bring you joy.

Take care of your body

Inconsistent and poor diet, exercise, and sleep schedules do not only negatively affect your physical health. Taking a pause from your busy life to eat a well-balanced meal, sweat a little, and rest your weary eyes can contribute to your mental health.

Be Social

It is easy to feel isolated while completing remote coursework, so don't forget to take time to interact with others. Communicate with classmates outside regular discussion boards, be present with family members, and laugh with friends.

If you need help, ask for it.

Most importantly, do not be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Your professors and advisors are here to support you. Utilize the support systems in your life or in your academic community to help alleviate stress and aid in your mental well-being.
