Our online Health Data Science Graduate Certificate (HDSGC) is designed for the healthcare industry or data industry professionals who are looking to expand their knowledge on analytic techniques and tools that are useful for both large and small healthcare data sources. Data science is among the fastest growing fields across all industries, and healthcare is no exception. The online graduate certificate in health data science at UNH exposes students to analytic techniques and tools that are useful for both large and small data sources in healthcare. In this program, you will develop an understanding of the U.S. health system,and how to visually, as well as quantitatively describe health impacts and outcomes. Students will also gain a better understanding of complex healthcare data.the phases of data analysis, while developing the ability to display actionable results.


The graduate certificate in health data science at UNH prepares students who have an interest in the field of health data science or are considering improving their analytic skills within their current role in the healthcare industry. Students in the program will gain exposure to the role of analytics in healthcare, statistical and programming foundations, and the visualization and translation of healthcare data. Students receive credit toward the M.S. in health data science, should they wish to continue with the additional eight courses.

We designed our online HDS Graduate Certificate program to provide students with a solid foundation in complex healthcare data whether their background is in finance, marketing, quality assurance or medicine. These contemporary analytical skills are a tremendous support for anyone whose work intersects with health data.

Curriculum & Requirements

The Graduate Certificate in Health Data Science (GCHDS), offered by the Department of Health Management and Policy within the College of Health and Human Services, prepares students interested in the field of health data science who want to improve their analytic skills in healthcare. The certificate can be completed in one semester or up to three years.

Students in the GCHDS program can expect to gain exposure to the role of analytics in healthcare, statistical and programming foundations, and the visualization and translation of healthcare data.

Successful completion of the certificate will provide students an opportunity to apply and continue on with the Master of Science in Health Data Science. All credits from the certificate will be applied to the MS degree, leaving only eight remaining courses.

Students claiming in-state residency must also submit a Proof of Residence Form. This form is not required to complete your application, but you will need to submit it after you are offered admission or you will not be able to register for classes.


If you attended UNH or Granite State College (GSC) after September 1, 1991, and have indicated so on your online application, we will retrieve your transcript internally; this includes UNH-Durham, UNH-Manchester, UNH Non-Degree work and GSC. 

If you did not attend UNH, or attended prior to September 1, 1991, then you must upload a copy (PDF) of your transcript in the application form. International transcripts must be translated into English.

If admitted, you must then request an official transcript be sent directly to our office from the Registrar's Office of each college/university attended. We accept transcripts both electronically and in hard copy:

  • Electronic Transcripts: Please have your institution send the transcript directly to Please note that we can only accept copies sent directly from the institution.
  • Paper Transcripts: Please send hard copies of transcripts to: UNH Graduate School, Thompson Hall- 105 Main Street, Durham, NH 03824. You may request transcripts be sent to us directly from the institution or you may send them yourself as long as they remain sealed in the original university envelope.

Transcripts from all previous post-secondary institutions must be submitted and applicants must disclose any previous academic or disciplinary sanctions that resulted in their temporary or permanent separation from a previous post-secondary institution. If it is found that previous academic or disciplinary separations were not disclosed, applicants may face denial and admitted students may face dismissal from their academic program.

Letters of Recommendation: 2 Required

Recommendation letters submitted by relatives or friends, as well as letters older than one year, will not be accepted.

Personal Statement

Discuss your educational and career goals and how a certificate in health data science will help you achieve those goals.

This statement must be included with your submitted application.

Additional Tuition & Fee Information

Our program has five 8-week terms per academic calendar year. Students who successfully complete two courses per e-term, as outlined below, earn their degree in as few as 4 months. Taking fewer courses per term will extend the completion timeframe.
