UNH Post-Masters Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate Overview

The University of New Hampshire's Post-Masters Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Certificate is for primary care nurse practitioners who are looking to gain the knowledge and skills to evaluate and treat mental health needs within a variety of patient care settings. Those who complete this certificate will have the knowledge and competence to:

  • Care for the psychiatric and mental health of patients throughout the life span, providing them with better quality of life
  • Ensure patient safety through the appropriate treatment plans for mental health and psychiatric disorders, as well as explain the risks and benefits of treatments to patients and their families
  • Provide consultation to health care providers and others to enhance quality and cost effective services
  • Advocate for complex patient and family medicolegal rights and issues

This full-time, low residency graduate certificate program combines the convenience of online learning with clinical practicum experience through a minimum of 500 clinical hours and two (2) on-campus residencies throughout the program. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification exam. 


Who Should Enroll?

The certificate of psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program is designed for nurse practitioners who wish to expand their practice into the role of psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. The psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner specialty area prepares nurses to manage all aspects of patient care including assessing and managing psychiatric and mental health care needs to all ages in a variety of settings. Successful completion of the required curriculum qualifies graduates to sit for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certification Examination.

Admissions Information

Applicants must hold a master’s degree or higher in nursing from an accredited college or university with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Applicants must also hold an unencumbered active RN license in the United States and must be licensed as an advanced practice nurse and certified as a primary care Nurse Practitioner.

  • Prior college transcripts
  • Two letters  of recommendation
  • Resume
  • Personal Statement Essay
  • Full list of application requirements

Priority consideration is given to students whose applications and required materials are received by the following deadlines:

  • Fall/August Admission (e-Term 1):  Applications due March 1st 
  • Spring/January Admission (e-Term 3):  Applications due August 1st
