Student Profiles

Alyssa Mahoney

javascript:void(0)I am from Gilmanton, NH. Currently working and interning in Laconia, NH. I originally went back to school to get my Master's Degree in SW to further my career and become a member of the Early Intervention team after graduation. During my first year internship, I was offered this position and immediately took it. Now, I am living out my goal of being on the Early Intervention team and furthering my education by gaining knowledge in the community mental health system. My goal has morphed into wanting to gain my Licensure in the state of NH and work as a children's therapist in the future. I am having too much fun right now.

Why did you choose the UNH online MSW program?

I am working full time and live far enough away that it would be too difficult with travel time to commit to be a full time student. The online program allows me the flexibility of class schedule and internship placements close to home.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of the program?

Forming the bond with my classmates. Although I have only met them once in two years, there is a relationship that is formed online, because we all understand what it feels like to have so many responsibilities. The placements have also been a very rewarding experience; the connections that are made with supervisors, co-workers, and clients are truly unforgettable.

Upon graduation, how will having your MSW degree impact your career?

I will be more qualified for my current job in Early Intervention and will be able to be a part of the evaluation team. I will also be able to gain my licensure and continue to follow my career path.

Kelly Westphal

I'm from Manchester, NH and am currently working at a community mental health center and hoping to pursue a career in mental health.

Why did you choose the UNH online MSW program?

I chose the UNH online MSW program because it allowed me to continue pursuing my career goals while I was in school.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of the program?

What surprised me most about the online program was the sense of comradery between the members of my cohort. Even though we weren't in class together every week we developed great friendships and an incredibly supportive environment.

Upon graduation, how will having your MSW degree impact your career?

Earning my MSW will allow me the opportunity to further my career in a field I love.

Aimee Kereage

I live in Exeter with my 12 year old daughter and husband.  My undergraduate work was in Sociology and I started a career working with survivors of domestic violence.  Life happened and I ended up pursuing a career in the hospitality business – spending 20 years working in restaurants.  I hit a milestone birthday and decided it was time to pursue my passions, at the same time UNH introduced the on-line program which fit nicely into my life.

Why did you choose the UNH online MSW program?

My life was hectic at the time I made a life decision.  My work schedule was 50 hours a week and having an active child I needed to figure out how I could pursue my passion while still maintaining some normalcy in my life.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of the program?

The connections and relationships I have built with the members of my cohort and with the faculty of UNH.  We have a very close cohort who have worked diligently together to be the first online MSW graduates (ya us!!!).

Melissa Grudinski

My name is Melissa Grudinski, and I am from Manchester, NH. My background is in trauma work, and I have experience working with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, families of homicide victims, and children and families involved in the child welfare system. I am getting my MSW to work in the mental health field with trauma survivors, and plan to work on licensure after earning my degree.

Why did you choose the UNH online MSW program?

I actually began my MSW at a school in Boston. I found the commute and class schedule to be challenging with my professional roles, and transferred to UNH because of the flexibility of the online program. I chose UNH over other online programs because of the quality of education I had received as an undergrad there, and because of the great reputation of UNH’s Social Work Department.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of the program?

The most rewarding part of the online MSW program at UNH is the ability to get my degree while maintaining employment. The program is rigorous and challenging, but by doing it in online, I am able to still have some flexibility in my professional roles.

Upon graduation, how will having your MSW degree impact your career?

Having my MSW will help me reach my goals of working in the mental health field. The MSW program at UNH provides an in-depth education that, paired with my professional experience, provides a strong foundation for my career. I could not have asked for a better educational experience than I got with UNH in the online MSW program.
